The Ten-Minute Science Lesson That Sells the Job

Your customers do not buy mils and megapascals — they buy the explanation. Here is the one we teach: rust is a battery. Steel, oxygen and salty water form a circuit, and the metal itself is what gets spent. Oil sprays interrupt the circuit for a season, then wash away — which is why the customer is paying every year. A sprayed elastomer membrane breaks the circuit permanently, because it does not migrate, dry out or rinse off. "Pay yearly forever, or pay once" closes the sale more often than any spec sheet.

Field prep that actually happens: we spec prep that survives contact with a gravel driveway in November. Pressure-wash, blow-dry with shop air (heat gun for seams), wire-cup the flaky spots, degrease rag, mask brakes/exhaust/driveline, spray. Forty minutes of prep on a typical pickup. No blasting requirement, no primer step, no excuses for skipping it — because the fast version is already realistic.

Passes and build: two wet passes cross-hatched gets you 40 mils; add a third along rocker seams, spring hangers and anywhere the wire cup found trouble. Check with a cheap magnetic gauge until your eye calibrates — most applicators stop needing the gauge inside two weeks.
